Erik Joost is the Watershed Program Manager for the City of Oconomowoc’s Watershed Protection Program (OWPP). He guides the City’s Adaptive Management program to achieve compliance with phosphorus water quality standards in the Oconomowoc River. Established in 2015, the program focuses on watershed-wide phosphorus reduction strategies, including agricultural land management practices, lake improvements, and stream restoration projects. Erik also helps coordinate the Farmers for Lake Country producer-led group, which fosters peer-to-peer learning around farming strategies that promote soil health and protect water quality. His work includes identifying areas of resource concern and developing practical solutions that enhance environmental conditions. Areas of focus range from agricultural conservation practices and wetland improvements to stream restoration and residential best practices. In general, Erik assists farmers and landowners in implementing conservation practices across the watershed. The OWPP also conducts watershed monitoring efforts and estimates phosphorus load reductions through modeling to track progress and guide future actions.
